SUPPORT TANZANIA

Neema Crafts

Neema Crafts was started in October 2003 by the Diocese of Ruaha. Its purpose is to provide handicrafts training and employment for deaf and physically disabled people in the Iringa region and also to change negative attitudes towards people with disabilities in the local community. Local employers are invited to see how skilled the workers at Neema Crafts quickly become when given the opportunity to fulfill their potential. The high quality of their work is changing the attitude of local people towards disabled people. The project produces paper products, beading and jewelry, hand weaving, and African patchwork and quilting.

Shanga Workshop and River House

Shanga Workshop and River House is one of life's small and heartwarming success stories. Begun in 2007, Shanga employs over 30 disabled Tanzanian people, has the River House Restaurant and the Shanga Shop—all located on one of Tanzania's oldest and prettiest coffee estates.

All income from the Shanga workshop, restaurant, and shop sales goes towards employing more disabled people—the waiting list for jobs is endless. At Shanga we learn together—how to make unique, fabulous, and high quality products from recycled materials in a positive environment that respects people of all kinds.

"Kindness is a language that blind people see and deaf people hear".

Peace House Africa Secondary School (Volunteer Opportunities in Tanzania)

Peace House Africa Secondary School, a boarding school which opened in 2007, is a unique and dynamic school that is already home to over 200 students with about 120 new students being enrolled each year. Located on land donated by the government of Tanzania, the school lies just west of Arusha, in northern Tanzania.

Peace House Africa is a 501(c)3 US nonprofit organization based in Minnesota and operates the Peace House Secondary School (PHS), which is a boarding school that provides a free education for AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in Tanzania.

Volunteers play a key role in the students' lives and stay on the campus in volunteer housing while volunteering at the school.
